What is Breast Lift Surgery?

The purpose of mastopexy, also known as breast lift surgery, is to address the issue of sagging breasts without altering their size significantly. This procedure involves eliminating extra skin, reshaping the breast tissue, repositioning the nipple to an ideal location, and reducing the size of the areola. As a result, the breasts obtain a rejuvenated, lifted appearance.

Why do people get breast lift surgery?

As we get older, the condition of our breasts can undergo alterations. These changes may involve a loss of flexibility, resulting in the stretching, sagging, or drooping of the breasts. This can occur due to various reasons:

  • Aging.
  • Breastfeeding (chestfeeding).
  • The occurrence of sagging breasts is influenced by genetics and often has a family connection.
  • Gravity.
  • Pregnancy.
  • Significant weight loss.

Mastopexy is a procedure that can enhance the firmness and youthful appearance of your breasts. It can also address any perceived flaws, including:

  • Areolas that face downward.
  • Nipples that are oriented towards varying directions.
  • Uneven or asymmetrical breasts.

Benefits of Breast Lift Surgery

• Increased Firmness: This technique rejuvenates and uplifts the breasts, resulting in a more youthful look with firmer and perkier breasts.

  • Enhanced Shapes: The procedure of breast lift surgery can redefine the shape of the breasts, resulting in a more proportionate and visually appealing figure.
  • Restoring your breasts to their pre-sagging state can greatly enhance your self-assurance and how you perceive your body.
  • Clothing Fit: Experience a wider selection of clothing choices and swimwear with enhanced breast shape.
  • Minimized Skin Irritation: Elevating drooping breasts may alleviate skin irritation and discomfort resulting from friction between the skin.

Before Surgery

What is Breast Lift Surgery?

Before undergoing breast lift surgery, it is important to take certain precautions, similar to any other surgical procedure. If the individual is a smoker, it is recommended that they quit smoking at least one week prior to the surgery. On the day of the surgery, the person’s overall health is assessed through necessary tests and examinations. Blood thinners and supplements, including vitamins, should be stopped after consulting with the doctor. It is crucial to inform the doctor about any regular medication usage and chronic medical conditions.

Operative Technique

During a breast lift procedure, the patient collaborates with the surgeon to determine the most suitable technique (Superior, Superolateral, or Inferior Pediculate) that will yield the desired outcome. The nipples and drooping breast tissue are carefully reshaped, with the nipple being returned to its original position and excess skin being eliminated. The presence of a scar, which varies in appearance (either a half-moon shape, circular scar around the nipple, or a straight incision scar measuring between 4-5 cm that descends from the nipple), depends on the degree of breast sagging.

If your desire is to achieve fully rounded, attractive breasts, you may consider undergoing both breast lift and breast augmentation procedures using silicone implants. On the other hand, if you wish to have smaller breasts, you may opt for a breast lift and reduction surgery, which effectively eliminates sagging. Initially, there will be visible scars, but they gradually fade away over time.

The operation is evaluated based on the severity of breast sagging. In Stage I, the sagging can be corrected either by using a breast implant or by removing skin around the nipples without using an implant, which leaves a crescent-shaped scar. In Stage II, a technique similar to a lollipop is used, where either the area around the nipple is cut or a 4-5 cm scar is left going down from the nipple. In Stage III, a lollipop-like technique is used which results in a reverse T-shaped scar or a 4-5 cm scar going down from the nipple.

Post-operative Instructions:

  • It is normal to have some discomfort after undergoing surgery, even when taking pain medication. This is a natural aspect of the healing process.
  • You will receive a prescription for pain medication that will be effective until your initial follow-up appointment after surgery.
  • During your initial visit after surgery, our team will assess your level of pain and effectively handle it throughout the period of immediate recovery.
  • The usual duration of acute pain management following a major surgery is usually between 6 and 12 weeks.
  • Typically, minor procedures require acute pain management for a period of 7-10 days.
  • It is prohibited to operate a vehicle if you are under the influence of narcotic pain medication or if your surgical team has advised against it.
What is Breast Lift Surgery?

Is it possible to have a breast lift and breast augmentation performed at the same time?

If the amount of sagging is extensive and there is not enough exocrine gland present, a silicone prosthesis is inserted into the breast as part of a breast augmentation procedure. This surgery is known to be the most technically challenging among breast surgeries. The size of the prosthesis placed underneath the breast and the rate at which the breast skin recovers are determined during the surgery.

Why do breasts sag?

The reasons for breasts losing their firmness can be listed as the following:

  • The breast may start to droop at a young age due to the genetic weakness of the ligaments that support it.
  • The sagging of breasts in pregnant and breastfeeding women is more pronounced. During breastfeeding, the breast tissue expands along with the skin and ligaments. Once breastfeeding ceases, the breast tissue reverts back to its pre-pregnancy state, but the skin and ligaments lose their previous firmness. The sagging of breasts occurs because the skin surrounding the breast tissue becomes looser, but this returns to normal after pregnancy.
  • Excessive weight gain and loss can lead to changes in breast volume, which in turn can have a negative impact on the skin’s elasticity and result in sagging.
  • The reduction of breast tissue that occurs with age is caused by hormonal changes, leading to a loss of fat tissue and a drooping appearance.
  • The shape of the body is inevitably influenced by gravity, which is particularly noticeable in individuals who do not wear a bra. The force of gravity pulls breasts downwards, resulting in sagging.
